‘A legends legend – Lance Armstrong kicks off Discovery Lance for Life Tour 2010’

 

09 March 2010 – Seven-time Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong successfully kicked off the highly anticipated ‘Discovery Lance for Life Tour 2010’on Tuesday, 09 March.

Arriving in Cape Town on Monday, Lance embarked on a visit to Spine Road Secondary School in Mitchell’s Plain and attended a banquet at Cape Town’s Green Point Stadium.


Joined by leading sports personalities including Makhaya Ntini, Ryk Neethling and Kirsty Coventry, Lance addressed 500 kids from JAG affiliated schools across Cape Town. Encouraging them through his personal journey, Lance shared his successes and discussed how sport has enabled him to triumph over his challenging circumstances. 

“I wouldn’t be speaking to you today if it wasn’t for my bike,” commented Armstrong. He continued, “Sport has enabled me to live my dream and do what I’m most passionate about.”

Lance also spoke openly about growing up in the absence of a father and encouraged the kids to listen to the people they trust and to always strive to do their best.


Following the day’s activities at Spine Road, the JAG Foundation hosted a banquet dinner for 450 guests at the new Green Point Stadium in Cape Town. Addressing the crowd, Lance spoke candidly about his battle with cancer, his most memorable moments on his bike, his chances of winning this year’s Tour de France and his dedication to his family.

Lance also expressed his gratitude and respect for the founder of the JAG Foundation, Greg James. He commended Greg for utilising his passion for sports to take initiative and address the needs within local communities.

“Today was a fitting start to what we hope is going to be an unforgettable tour,” commented Olympic medallist and JAG CEO, Elana Meyer. She continued, “Positive role models are an integral part of our communities and with Lance’s testimony, we encourage our kids to dream big and in Lance’s words, live strong.”
