Goodbye to our great coach
Goodbye to our great coach, mentor and a true friend!
The road running community was shocked on Thursday morning with the news that Two Oceans, JAG, and Run-On-Line coach Dave Spence passed away at his home in Thornton Cape Town on Wednesday (6 January). Dave who had been coaching since 1978, took on the role of head coach for Pinelands Athletics in 1984, and more recently launched the Adidas Athletic Club in Cape Town.

His experience and expertise saw him cover the full gambit of race distances. He produced South Africa’s top sprinter Johan Rossouw who clocked 10.08 seconds over the 100m in Johannesburg in April 1988. Rossuw’s performance stands as the current SA record.

At the other end of the scale he guided marathoner Makahosonke Fika who ran a 2:10:13 in Berlin in 2003 and represented South Africa in the World Championships.

In recent years the 62 year old was known for the hundreds of road runners who he successfully guided through the Old Mutual Two Oceans 56km Marathon and other major South African events. He was involved with the JAG Foundation since June 2008, when ProNutro JAGRunners programe was launched. Dave was the master coach on the programme. He passed on his valuable mentoring and coaching skills onto 12 ProNutro JAGRunners coaches and touched the hearts of 700 kids participating in the programme.

Dave will be truly missed by the whole JAG family, our kids and the coaches. To a lot of us he was not only the coach but a great friend and a father figure.

JAG Foundation would like to express their deepest condolences to Dave’s family and friends.
