The extremely popular Totalsports Ladies Race continues its relationship with the JAG Foundation this year by once again selecting this awe-inspiring organisation as its charity of choice. Eight hundred of JAG's Mighty Metre runners will be on the starting line in the streets of Stellenbosch on Sunday, 09 August, in support of National Women's Day.
The JAG Foundation was started in April 2007 to give the youth of South Africa an opportunity to develop and achieve their potential through sport and education. The JAG Foundation focuses on education and sport development at grassroots level and aims to encourage young South Africans to dream and to transform their dreams into achievable realities. According to JAG CEO Elana Meyer, JAG is committed to making a difference in the lives of disadvantaged children in South Africa.
"We are continuing to grow our impact in the lives of children through the medium of sport and we are really excited to be the Charity of Choice for the Totalsports Ladies Race for the second year running. We use sport as a vehicle and implement sporting programmes such as Mighty Metres to encourage youth development," says Meyer.
"The event organisers of the Totalsports Ladies Race has generously given us 800 entries so that our Mighty Metres girls can participate in this fabulous race. Participating girls reside in Stellenbosch and surrounding areas such as Kayamandi, Cloetesville, Lynedoch, Vlottenburg and Devon Valley. We started with 2 000 children when we launched the programme in 2007 and are very proud with our current 28 000 members. The girls loved taking part in the 2008 Totalsports Ladies Race and for many of them it was a day that they would never forget," concluded Meyer.
The Totalsports Ladies Race will start at 08h30 in Plein Street, Stellenbosch and participants can choose between a 5km or 10km fun-filled event. The first 4 500 entrants will receive an official race T-shirt and medals will be awarded to all finishers. Walkers, joggers and runners of all ages are invited to take part in both routes through the scenic town of Stellenbosch in honour of women countrywide.
Moms with prams are more than welcome. Husbands, friends and family are also encouraged to join in the fun and show their support on the day. With awesome prizes up for grabs including a two night stay for two at the magnificent Sanbona Wildlife Reserve, the Totalsports Ladies Race is one event not to be missed.
Heart 104.9FM's much-loved Weekend Breakfast Show DJ, Sam Roy, will be broadcasting live from the Totalsports Ladies race between 06h00 and 10h00. Fellow Heart 104.9FM DJs - Lee Downs from the weekday "Bokomo Hearty Breakfast Show" and Marguerita Freeks from the "Soulful Sundays" slot - will also be seen in action on the day as the race MCs. Spectators can also look forward to a sizzling hot performance by 2009 South African Idol, Sasha-Lee against the backdrop of the beautiful Stellenbosch mountains.
