HOW JAG YOUTH RUGBY works?
Pinelands Rugby Academy - Primary Schools
- A volunteer rugby co-ordinator is appointed for running the programme in the selected community assisted by 2 qualfied coaches
- A central field , Bergsig Primary and or the Metropolitan field is used
- Practices last approx 90 mins
- Equipment is supplied to the cluster/community
- The schools that play rugby enter teams into an internal league and play their matches during the week.
- Schools that don’t have sufficient players to make up teams will be accommodated at the cluster combined practice
- All players whether they participate in the internal league or not are invited to attend the Bonteheuwel Cluster practice, where a team is selected to represent the area in the WP Primary Schools Sat league.
- There will also be the elite team that will play friendlies and this will be made up of players from all the Jag Youth squads, ie Pinelands/Bontheuwel
- 3 age groups are entered at the start of the season, they are mini rugby(u9) , (u)11 and (u)13
JAG YOUTH RUGBY (senior schools)
As the boys enter high school and if the school they attend does not offer rugby the following happens
- The boys are brought through to Pinelands 2 x week for practices and play matches as JAG Youth team against schools like Reddam, Westerford, Herzlia ,Bergvliet, Muizenberg etc
- 4 age groups are catered for they are (u)14, (u)15, (u)16 and (u)18/19
- The age groups, (u)13, (u)16 and (u)19 will receive special attention as these are the age groups that have WP junior teams.
- All kit is supplied .
- Outside coaches are brought in for these sessions, ie Dave Spence for Speed work, former Springboks Keith Andrews and Eddie Andrews for forward coaching and Robbie Fleck for backs
- All coaches will do the basic level one Medics course
Boys that have been though to u19 with us are then encouraged to become Referees and coaches by attending the WPRU accredited courses. At present we have 2 from Bonteheuwel recently qualified and one each from Maitland and Pinelands.respectively
Background info on Pinelands Rugby Academy
In 1996 the Pinelands Rugby Academy (PRA) was borne out of the absence of rugby in Pinelands Primary schools and the surrounding areas.
The PRA mission is to provide sports development and coaching opportunities to children from all walks of life, who do not necessarily have the opportunities in life afforded to others.
This program which now forms part of the JAG Sports and Education Foundation is committed to the disadvantaged youth and engendering a culture of dignity and providing them with a sense of achievement through sport. It goes beyond sports development by improving lifestyles, school careers and the interpersonal skills of our players. |
